Description: In this painting the knotted white chadder, a cultural symbol of the Pashtuns, powerfully
represents the limitations that women in this traditional society must bear. The series of knots on the chaddar
depicts how the Pashtun women are restricted in every step of their lives. The conscientious embroidery on
the chaddar conveys the struggle of Pashtuns to modernize the chaddar while also silently referring to their
desire for freedom from the restrictions of Pushtun culture. The floor in the background with heavy chips
makes a striking visual statement against the culture, suggesting that conventional values of Pashtun
community are being questioned and challenged. It acts as a source to critically analyze and revisit the
cultural restrictions and may be beneficial in preparing one to let go of things that act as barrier no longer
one’s personal development and expression.
